About Hotel Card Locks

Throughout history, hospitality toward travelers and guests has been a valued tradition across all cultures and civilizations. In ancient Egypt, along the Nile River, tents were erected to host those who traveled from other lands to pay tribute to the Pharaohs and their deities.

In today’s world, purpose-built facilities designed to host and accommodate guests are known as hotels. These establishments vary in design based on regional culture, available technology, and budget. Some older hotels still rely on traditional mechanical keys to lock room doors. A common issue with this outdated system is that guests may leave the key inserted on the inside of the lock to prevent unauthorized entry. When they leave the room, the key is often forgotten in the door, making it difficult to re-enter. In many cases, a locksmith is required to dismantle or even break the lock to gain access again.

Challenges such as these have led many hotel owners to adopt more advanced security technologies, replacing mechanical keys with hotel key card systems. One of the most effective and widely used solutions is the hotel card lock system. It’s important to note that among the various locking technologies available, only card locks are considered the standard and most practical choice for hotels. Although card locks may be more expensive than standard mechanical locks, their functionality and reliability make them a far more commonly used option.

Biometric fingerprint locks or digital keypad handles are generally unsuitable for hotel use and can result in additional costs. Hoteliers who purchase such alternatives often end up facing repeated malfunctions, requiring costly repairs or replacements. Eventually, the most reliable solution proves to be the installation of a dedicated hotel card lock system.

ALOCK, a digital lock company, has developed and manufactured a wide range of hotel card locks and smart door handles based on cutting-edge global technologies. Their products are designed with both hotel management needs and guest expectations in mind.

ALOCK’s hotel card handle systems are generally categorized into two main groups:

  • Offline Hotel Card Door Handles
  • Online Hotel Card Lock Systems

Offline Hotel Card Lock and Handle Systems

Offline hotel card lock handles are among the best-selling, most widely used, and cost-effective electronic locking solutions globally. These systems are designed using 13.56 MHz MIFARE radio frequency technology and represent the most diverse product line within ALOCK’s hotel lock range. Their popularity stems from their offline functionality and the unique technologies incorporated in their design, making them more durable and in-demand compared to many international brands. The price of each model varies depending on its specifications.

These locks support precise, time-based card access down to the second for guests, housekeeping staff, internal managers, maintenance personnel, and other hotel departments. In addition, access levels can be customized based on specific time windows—for example, housekeepers can be restricted to accessing guest rooms only between 11:00 AM and 1:35 PM, as defined by hotel management.

Access reporting is also available for managers. They can retrieve logs of the last 1,000 entries for any specific handle using just a single administrative card.

Crafted using Japanese-made components and rated A+++ for energy efficiency, these locks have the lowest battery consumption among competing brands. A standard non-alkaline AA battery lasts up to 18 months, while alkaline batteries extend that lifespan to over 30 months.

ALOCK’s hotel card locks can be integrated with smart elevator and parking systems, allowing guests to use their room card for access to these facilities as well.

Additionally, these handles support integration with power control systems such as power switches and hotel card holders, ensuring that only the correct room card—for instance, Room 101’s card—can unlock that specific room and activate its power supply during the guest’s stay. This functionality enhances the popularity of ALOCK’s offline systems, even compared to some online models on the market.

Integration with Hotel Smart Systems

One of the standout features of ALOCK’s electronic hotel card locks is their seamless software and hardware integration with hotel smart systems. The ALOCK hotel management software can connect with Property Management Systems (PMS), Building Management Systems (BMS), and other comprehensive hotel software platforms. This allows hotel staff to issue guest cards and manage access directly through their main hotel software—without needing to open the ALOCK interface.

Moreover, by connecting ALOCK handles to hotel management software, it’s easy to convert offline locks into online systems. For instance, once a room is booked, the assigned housekeeper or manager can instantly view access logs and updates via mobile phone, tablet, or computer.

Do Not Disturb (DND) System

Each ALOCK hotel handle is equipped with a built-in Do Not Disturb (DND) system. When the guest locks the door using the internal night latch, neither housekeeping staff nor other guests can open the door with their card. The system automatically issues a “Do Not Disturb” alert, enhancing privacy and security.

Additional Features

These handles are also equipped with a mechanical key override for emergency access. Other advanced features include:

Passage Mode (free access without a card)

Multi-level staff access permissions

Alerts for expired or unauthorized cards

Anti-card tampering technology

Remote deletion of lost cards without needing proximity to the handle

It is important to note that “offline” in this context means the lock does not communicate in real-time with the front desk or reception system.

Online Hotel Card Lock and Handle Systems

Online hotel card lock handles not only offer all the advanced features mentioned previously, but also support a range of modern technologies such as Wireless, NB-IoT, and Mobile App integration. These online systems provide real-time status updates for each hotel room lock, including access logs, battery level monitoring, digital night latch status (enabled or disabled), and more.

These locks can be unlocked remotely from the reception desk, without the need for a physical key card.

When combined with other online hotel automation systems by ALOCK—such as in-room panels or control units for features like Do Not Disturb, Housekeeping Requests, etc.—a more comprehensive set of reports and controls can be displayed directly on the front desk, housekeeping terminals, and hotel management software.

ALOCK’s mobile-enabled online locks are equipped with technologies such as Bluetooth, NFC, and dedicated mobile apps, allowing hotels to offer keyless entry to their guests. Depending on the buyer’s specific requirements, each of these technologies can be individually configured and delivered.

This product range is designed to operate without the need for a card—guests can unlock their room doors conveniently using their smartphones.
